Most people who start a blog, generally would start with something they are familiar with, or within their area of expertise.
Nothing wrong with that, EXCEPT…
…what type of blog are you trying to become? If you’re targeting for Free Search Engine traffic, my question for you would be, do you think you would have a chance of getting ranked?
If your interest or area of expertise is in the home based business, credit card loans, credit cards, make money online, cancer, debt consolidation, financial planning, etc (any of those highly profitable niches), then good luck trying to get ranked on the first page competing with the big guys. It’s almost impossible especially if your SEO knowledge is limited.
If you’re seriously interested in getting free search engine traffic, my advise (for a start at least) would be to go for those low hanging fruit, i.e. low competition niches. That’s where people get stuck. They have no idea where to get ideas.
It’s pretty simple, start browsing through magazines, be on the lookout for KWs when you are surfing the net, article directories, forums, web directories, etc. There are so many places for you to get ideas from, you just need to be actively looking for them. If you’re new, you need to make this a conscious effort. Once you have gained more experience, it will become second nature to you and it’ll be pretty easy then.
Did I mention that you can also ask your friends for ideas? I got a few just by asking and prodding my buddies.
