Problogging 101

by admin on August 22, 2009

You have a blog, you consider yourself professional, therefore you could considering yourself part of the Problogging community right? - Not

This statement may be true for the past 2-3 years but trust me, this is not applicable today. The world of Problogging has evolved and this kind of attitude would not get you closer to your goal to be a problogger. The competition is stiff and therefore you must always be aware of the latest changes and updates which would help you to be the "leader" in the pack. If you are just starting, let me share you the basics of problogging which could be called "Problogging 101".

The Physical Form

Some people might consider this menial but having a good blog lay-out would help you in terms of attracting readers and loyal readers at that! Think of a good design or lay-out for your blog that would be reader-friendly as well as navigational friendly. No one wants to have a very, very, long site because if readers would be greeted with that sight, they would more likely close  it and go on to a blog which contains to a much more readable content. If you do not want to dwell with the effort of thinking about design, there are different publishing platform which would help you make a decision. The easiest and most popular (in my opinion) would be wordpress or blogspot.

The Blog Content

Now that you have considered the appearance of your blog, it’s time to move on with the content. If you feel that people are really interested about your morning rituals then go ahead and blog it! But, beware! You have to blog it in a really interesting manner so that the readers would have a reason to come back for more. If you are still unsure of this blogging style then you could consider "Niche Blogging". Niche Blogging from the word itself suggests that you should have a central topic or theme for your blog. Coming up with your topic is tricky because it more or less suggests that you could be considered as an "expert" for that topics and other sub-topics. A good example for Niche blogging would be Darren Rowse’s blog which I continually and religiously read. Take a moment to consider the topic you want to specialize and continue to develop it as your blog moves forward.

Keywords are also important if you want to have a place in terms of online searching for your blog. Integrating these keywords in your blog content is a little tricky because you want to have your blog to produce worthy content and not just a random slur of words that do mean anything! The recommended keyword density would be around 2%-3% for every blog post.

The Networking

Talking to yourself online while blogging would not be a good thing especially if you want to present yourself as a Problogger. Networking in the online world is basically the same as networking physically. This means socializing with other people particularly with the same interests. Communicating, exchanging ideas and sharing insights is a good approach to be accepted in the online world. You should also take time to join forums, respond on your reader’s comments as well as marketing your blog and yourself as a Professional Blogger.

Anyway, here are just some basics that you might consider in truly becoming a problogger. Of course, there are still other ideas and tips that would be helpful and this is a just a simple guide to help you through your goal. If you have any other tips and suggestions, please feel free to share it!

Quality… this is something that should be present in everything that we do and yes, this also pertains to blogging particularly professional blogging.

Writing content for your blog is not that easy especially when you are concentrating more on problogging. There are already a lot of tips in blogging written but I really find this blog post written by Darren Rowse a must before starting out in the blogging world.

Quality is essential to every blog post and regardless of how many or how frequent you post, if it does not contain any quality then all of your efforts would be for nothing. Ensuring quality blog post is not that hard but having a checklist or guidelines would be a lot of help in checking that you have a quality blog post.

Here are some guidelines which could help you:

Is it relevant?

In case you are wondering, relevance means importance and this should be reflective of the content that you are writing in your blog. If you feel yourself that the topic that you are writing is not important then do not even dream to continue. If it is not important to you personally, how can you make it important to other people?

Is it up-to-date?

Being the first ones to cover the newest and freshest content is definitely an advantage if you are aiming to be of importance in problogging. Nobody wants to read yesterday’s news therefore you have to make constant effort to ensure that you are constantly up to date with the news and issues that you are covering.

Can I relate to it personally?

One of the things that could make your blog stand out from the rest is the way that you make the topic or issue personalize through your blogging style. Discussing a topic through facts is ok and standard but making sure that you put your mark or your stamp in it through blogging makes you unique in the world of professional blogging. Personality is evident in professional blogging and you should therefore know how to make use of it for your own blogging advantage.

Anyway, what I have presented are just some basic guidelines or questions that would help you as you go along in terms of managing your blog content. There are still other aspect or factors that needs to be considered so feel free to make your own list for ensuring quality in blogging.

As mentioned, quality is really essential in professional. It doesn’t matter if you have a very attractive blog site if you are not producing quality-wise content in your blog. The essence of a blog is still the content and therefore, this should be your focal point when doing professional blogging.
